Letters to the Editor
Fans vs. Apple TV and Does 1-100
First, let me extend my thanks to the Giants, Apple TV and other entities, without whose fan-unfriendly stream-exclusive 'service' I would have wasted my Friday night on the Dodgers game. Of course,
the G-Men did break up a no-hitter after the fifth, with one of their two hits. Seriously? I had more hits on my bong.
How many Bay Area fans streamed this, as compared to standard television numbers?
The impulse and reflex of fans to watch every game on television will wane with the increase of exclusively streamed content. They will learn there may be other activities besides "the game," and lose interest. Eventually, attendance and related television, (post-game shows), fan-oriented products and other revenues will drop.
This game could have been important if there had been a pennant stretch drive. Then Apple and others could have had some real leverage and shown their disdain for true fans with gusto. Oops! But it's still a rivalry game. At least drop the "exclusive," so that a large part of the G-Men's loyal fan base can watch it!
Jacques Diamond
Oakland, CA
Here Come 'da Judge
As of Sunday, Aaron Judge had 59 home runs, two shy of Roger Maris' AL record. I hope he does NOT break the record. (His 59 home runs are the most by a right-handed batter in AL history, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.)
Save it for when Judge becomes a Giant, rumored to be next season. In the meantime, leave Roger Maris alone on the mountain top. It just feels right.
Reasons why the G-Men would benefit from a Judge, (not a "Special Master"), are set forth in this article from ESPN. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/34617828/new-york-yankees-aaron-judge-hits-58th-homer-moves-three-al-record
Come off some cash and buy yourself a Judge! It works in D.C., and it will work here.

If William Shakespeare were here today as a sportswriter, we would have a new play on Broadway based on The Trey Lance saga.
On opening night, Lance went down with an ankle injury and was ruled out immediately. He left on a cart with his right leg in an air cast. Why, as QB, he was featured as the next Frank Gore
is a valid question.
Now, it’s Jimmy Garoppolo who will likely play for a good portion, if not for all of the season, if he can stay healthy. ("ATTN: Nate Sudfeld":
oh wait, he left for Detroit.) "Brock Purdy, please report
to the front desk."
Jimmy G. was the pro we all know him to be and led the Niners
to victory over the Seahawks. Now back to Shakespeare:
All the world’s a stage, And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts. (From As You Like It)

I hate that it's already time to do this
by Howard Pearlstein
But I have to do it.
It's something I really don’t do very often because it's so annoying but I have been physically unable to do this for the past year.
Around a year ago I fell, dislocated my left shoulder and broke the humerus. Took six-to-eight months to rehab until I could dry my back after a shower using both hands on the towel (the way that Disney always has Donald Duck doing it, pulling the towel across his feathery butt.)
But now I can actually do it, kind of rude and bragging, but still, gotta pat myself on the back.
Pretty sure I was the first one in print to say that the 9ers needed to go traditional, i.e., do a Carmen Policy -- re-negotiate Jimmy G’s contract to keep him on as backup, while dropping Nate Sudfeld and keeping Brock Purdy. I said it right here in these virtual pages. After the second preseason game.
Not that I don’t expect Trey to develop into a fine QB. I do, assuming the S^%% learns how to %%&$## slide and survive long enough. Because being a new QB involves learning a lot of things on the field, most of them hard and fast and followed with a lot of ice. First of all, how big and fast the players are in the NFL. And while still learning those things, we’d need a good experienced QB able to step in.
But I didn't expect to need the backup to step in so soon.
I thought Purdy was a keeper because he seems to have that presence in the pocket, a stillness, watching, seeing all that’s going on. Something like what Joe Montana had BUT that does NOT mean I even think he can become another Joe -- not saying that -- we had the one and only. But that he COULD become an exceptionally fine NFL QB.
SO, even though comparisons are odious, NFL announcers love to do it all the time; “He’s got that same thing that fill-in-the-blank had.” So how about another QB who had some of the same presence.
One of my students back in the 80s had been a linebacker in the AFC, don’t remember which team – he’d been with a few. But we sometimes hung out after class and one time I asked him, what was the scariest thing in his career.
He really surprised me. “Joe Namath.”
???
“We were playing the Jets. I got around the guard and there was nothing between me and Namath but air. And -- he met my eyes, stared me in the eyes, held the look. Never took his eyes off mine. And he threw a pass -- 40 yards, completed. And he never took his eyes off mine! And I lost a step the rest of the game."
It’s unhappily ironic that a knock on Jimmy G was that he got injured too often. Let’s hope Trey Lance’s injury is not too bad. His ankle – broken? No man, no. Not even “MRI on Monday?” Damn. But it depends on what in the ankle broke. Lots of moving parts in there. I'm hopeful for him.
Go 9ers.

Amaury Pi-González (left) and Jaime Jarrin, voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998, during the 1977 World Series at Dodger Stadium between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Jaime Jarrín in the Home Stretch
of His Career
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
Jaime Jarrin has been the Spanish Voice for the Los Angeles Dodgers for over six decades. He told me about this current 2022 season: "Mi carrera como cronista radial terminará definitivamente cuando realize mi última transmición, ojalá sea en la Serie Mundial y terminar mi ciclo como empezé con los Dodgers ganando la Serie Mundial en 1959 contra los White Sox." Trans: "My career as a radio sportscaster will definitely come to an end when I broadcast the World Series and end my cycle which started when I began with the Dodgers winning the 1959 World Series over the White Sox."
Did you ever envision such a lengthy and successful career when you first began? "Nunca ni en sueño crei que recibiría tantas bendiciones en mi carrera, vine a este país a ampliar mis horizontes esperando únicamente ubicarme y seguir trabajando como todos los inmigrantes que llegan a este incomparable y generoso país." Trans: "Never even in a dream did I believe I would receive so many blessings in my career. I came to this country to broaden my horizons, only with the hope of settling down like all the immigrants that come to this incomparable and generous country."
Jaime's career began prior to his arrival to the United States. "Mi carrera en radio comenzó en 1951 cuando a los 16 años de edad obtuve mi primer trabajo frente a un micrófono como periodista radial en la emisora HCJB La Voz de los Andes en mi nativa Quito, Ecuador. Trans: "My radio career began in 1951 at 16 years of age when I got my first job in front of a microphone as a radio journalist on HCJB La Voz de los Andes in my native Quito, Ecuador."
Trans: "I think I will miss the game that I am in love with, but most of all I will miss the journalists and colleagues, most of all my brother and adviser, Vin Scully. The local and national media in English, as well as in Spanish, have been very generous, especially during this year of my farewell; my eternal gratitude."
What does Jaime Jarrín plan to do after his retirement? "Seguiré afiliado a los Dodgers como un embajador por lo menos por dos años, pero mi carrera radial termina en este 2022." Trans: "For at least the next two years I will continue my affiliation with the Dodgers as an ambassador, but my broadcast career ends this 2022."
I have known Jaime Jarrín since the mid-1970s. I have always had the utmost respect and admiration for Jaime. It is truly a pleasure to have known him for a lifetime, especially that World Series in 1977 (that is 45 years ago, for those scoring at home). As recently as the late 1990s I shared the booth broadcasting with Jaime for the Spanish radio networks in the U.S. and Latin America. A consummate professional and truly a gentleman. I wish him the very best.
I have told Jaime many times, he was the luckiest man that I have known in broadcasting. Why? He was fortunate enough to have spent his whole career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team that has always appreciated the value and importance of the Hispanic market. Not now, when in Los Angeles Spanish is spoken as frequently as English and the Latinos are the largest minority in the country, with at least 65 million people, but from the very beginning in the 1950s, when it was not "politically correct" to speak Spanish.
The Dodgers are very close to clinching their divisional title. As of today they have a 98-44 record, the best in the major leagues. Starting this Friday when the Dodgers open a weekend series against the Giants, Jaime Jarrín will be calling all the games (like he always does) home and away on radio station KTNQ 1020AM in Los Angeles. MLB Baseball Hall of Fame announcer, Jaime Jarrín, is now in the home stretch of his career.
Felicidades Jaime.

Ebobisse scores 16th goal of the season; Quakes host
LA Galaxy in California Clasico next Saturday
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at PayPal Park. The result extends San Jose’s home unbeaten streak to three matches (2-0-1).
FC Dallas took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute. A cut-back pass by Marco Farfan found Jader Obrian at the top of the box. Obrian’s first-timed shot was deflected and caught JT Marcinkowski diving the other direction.
San Jose equalized just eight minutes later. Following a handball in the box, forward Jeremy Ebobisse successfully converted his penalty kick attempt. It marked his 16th goal of 2022, tied for third-most in a single season in Quakes history and most among all players other than Chris Wondolowski.

RBBS Day 2: Early Leaders Holding Strong
Moderate airs, sunny skies and flatter seas defined the second day of competition and offered crews some reprieve from yesterday’s heavier conditions at the Rolex Big Boat Series, hosted by St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, California. Peak-puff metrics might have dipped a bit from day one’s fresh velocities, but this did nothing to diminish competition levels at a regatta that has defined West Coast big-boat racing since its creation in 1964. Talent, smart tactics and local wisdom run deep across all 76 teams. Polish and preparation were evident on the racecourse today, with multiple boats continuing picket fence results.
After four races, the Cal 40 Viva and Express 37 Spindrift V posted their fourth bullets in their respective One Design classes. Mayan also scored her second bullet on corrected time in the Classics class, which only races once per day.

Brink Wins CalHope Courage Award
The award honors student-athletes at California colleges and universities for overcoming the stress, anxiety, and mental trauma associated with personal hardships and adversity
STANFORD, Calif. - Rising junior Cameron Brink was named a September recipient of the CalHOPE Courage Award, receiving the honor Monday night at Oracle Park during a San Francisco Giants game.
The monthly award honors student-athletes at California colleges and universities for overcoming the stress, anxiety, and mental trauma associated with personal hardships and adversity. It is presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), in association with The Associated Press, CalHOPE, a crisis counseling and support resource for communities impacted by public health emergencies, operated by the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), and the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Mental Well-Being.
While Brink was helping lead Stanford to the 2020-21 NCAA championship, averaging 9.9 pts, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game, it seemed like a dream come true for the 6-foot-4-inch freshman. However, following the run to the national title during a worldwide pandemic, she shared publicly the mental health challenges of isolation and stress she experienced from a season spent primarily on the road. The native of Beaverton, Oregon showed incredible courage, sharing how the pressure of the season weighed on her, as well as her decision to seek professional help for her mental well-being.

WILL BE PUBLISHED ON OCTOBER 4, 2022
For the past 60 years, Michael Zagaris has taken his camera behind the scenes of the NFL, capturing the moments that define America’s game. With unparalleled access—42 Super Bowls, 49 seasons as team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers, and a behind-the-scenes passport to the rest of the NFL—Zagaris takes his aim beyond the field and to the locker room, the bench, the practices, and the training camps. His intimate portraits convey the nerves, the tension, the pain, and the elation with emotional depth and the clarity of a longtime insider.
With contributions from celebrated Hall of Famers Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, and Fred Biletnikoff, as well as text from renowned sportswriter Steve Cassady and sociologist Dr. Harry Edwards, Field of Play highlights Zagaris’s storied career as a photographer, showcasing the irresistible force of football and celebrates its enduring presence.

The New York Yankees are the greatest dynasty, not only in baseball but in all of sports. The Yankees, in fact, embody a series of dynasties, from Ruth-Gehrig through Jeter-Rivera. But the absolute greatest Yankees were the 1949-1953 pinstripers, winners of an unprecedented five consecutive World Series. The Yankee Way, Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa writes in the book's forward, is “full of Yankee winning keys, star-studded competitions, and insights about one of baseball's historically fascinating periods.” Key contributors to this dynasty, including Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Phil Rizzuto, and manager Casey Stengel, are remembered by their teammate, Charlie Silvera, catcher and co-author.
Dave Newhouse was an award-winning sportswriter/columnist for the Oakland Tribune before his retirement. He has continued his work as an author and The Yankee Way is his eighteenth book. He lives with his wife, Patsy, an artist, in Oakland, CA.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and
4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
